I absolutely love the Le BOZO CD. I am listening to it right now, and it is great...wonderful compositions, arrangements, players...and I really like this instrument combination (of course, I am a real sucker for a B-3). The recording quality is very good also. (PS - GREAT FRONT COVER!!)
I really like the Moi CD. I really like that organ sound. At times,
with this smaller lineup, I felt I was listening to parts of the first B,S,& T with David
Clayton Thomas. There were times when I would have liked to hear a guitar in there somewhere
- guess I'm no jazz purist. Don't like the drums on "Nude Math", the rhythm sounds
forced...not smooth at all, it should flow like on "Joe Beam's", and the timbale fills all sound
like he dropped his sticks on them! "Bee Jay" needed the drum intro set up with a fill at
the very start (i.e., "Ain't Too Proud"). Why is there cross stick on "C'est Moi" and why
is the cow bell doubling up with it...should be cleaner, not filled up with unneeded
percussion. Don't like the ride pattern on the hi-hat on "BOZO allegro"...sounds like the
rhythm that every high school drummer plays when the director wants something funky.
And again when the percussionist plays, it sounds like they are doubling the same
rhythm...shouldn't it complement and blend? (OK Dave, why don't you really tell us
how you feel!?!) Besides those knit-picky drum things (it's all I know so I can
criticize with some experience and knowledge, not that I could even attempt to play
them better, which I couldn't), I like C'est Moi. For me much more listenable than
Relentlessly Cheerful. I just liked the instrumentation better. It felt and sounded
better...my mind wandered on Relentlessly...couldn't stay interested.
The new albums are killer!
I think you're absolutely right about paring down the
band and refining the sound. I can't pick out exactly what it is, but it
sounds tighter to me in comparison to the last album, plus a lot brighter.
Trombone guy is screamin'! Love it! I really like the live number in
there...terrific sound and I can see how that would be a great show opener.
Thank you very much for the wonderful gift of your music. Every time
I listen to one of your new discs, I am very impressed. Le BOZO is fantastic. I play
it and just go with the flow. Some of the tunes remind me of "Mr. Holland's Opus". Either
that or I have some sort of inner ear trouble. Whatever you're doing, keep doing it (assuming
it's ok with Candlin and the law).
I love your "Le BOZO, C'est Moi" CD so much I'm going to feature it
on the FRONT PAGE of CD Baby...I'm REALLY picky about what goes on the front page. We get about 40 new albums
a DAY coming in here now (about 12,000 total), and yours is one of the best I've ever heard.
